This weeks UK number 1 is no suprise really, the Haiti appeal has certainly brought out the masses and although I don’t like this version of REMs’ ‘Everybody Hurts’, I do agree with the principles behind the charity single.
Florence and The Machine and Dizzee’s entrance into the chart at number 2 is a far more interesting story and once again shows just how much a tv appearance can boost popularity and sales figures. The song was performed by the pair at the Brits on Tuesday night and was produced and mixed by the Brits own engineers. It was released for download in the early hours of the morning and by 3pm Wednesday, the song had hit number 1 on ITunes.
I have become dismayed at the influence TV plays on our charts at the moment, with the Christmas number 1 being XFactors spot (I know, they didn’t manage it last year but lets face it they were there the next week!) and now tv’s latest offering, Glee, taking the number 1 spot in our albums chart and 2 of the places in our singles. Now I am not saying that Glee is a bad programme, in fact, I must admit I have watched some episodes and found them quite amusing but to have 2 songs in the top 10??
So, if you are unsigned or signed and want to get into the charts, start writing a tv show, forget the songs, its the tv that matters! A cynical approach? Time will tell….
